My WHY....
It was the Fall of 2013 and I had just begun my first term as a new Vice Principal at Renfrew Elementary, in East Vancouver. I was ready for a change and wanted to find some roots in one school as I had been juggling 3-4 schools a year for 12 proud years as a school counsellor. It was in the Fall 2013 that my Principal had a conversation with me about my personal growth plan and what goals I might be interested in focussing on. I was beginning to wonder what the purpose of schooling and education were. I was worried my Principal would think that I was being negative by questioning the purpose of school, that I did a google search and up came, Dr. Yong Zhao's book, "World Class Learners" which sparked my interest so I went ahead and ordered it. I loved the book, ideas and the rest is history. I began a book club with his book and others became interested and at about the same time Dr. Zhao happened to be doing some keynotes in neighbouring districts and Vancouver was able to invite him for our Fall Whistler retreat. When I heard that this program was being led by Dr. Zhao I just knew I had to join as I wanted to learn more about the purpose of education and schooling. It has been a privilege to be learning with such amazing scholars and colleagues. What a gift!
Doctorate studies: What have I learned?
Up until this program I would have only considered myself as a practitioner. I have since developed a deeper understanding of what it means to be a researcher and most importantly the nuances of DATA! I feel my course work thus far has provided me with a greater understanding of evidence based work, the implications of such and how research can inform practice.
Post Doctorate studies: My hopes and dreams....
This learning journey has provided me thus far with a better understanding of our education system and stronger connection with colleagues from across BC who care so deeply about children, educators and families. For the first time in my career, I feel part of a learning network. The growth I have had as a learner, I attribute to the high quality instruction we have received as well the hybrid model has proven to be an effective medium. COVID has now shown the necessity for such flexibility in learning and I was able to experience this learning format prior to COVID and it has not really impacted my studies. I look forward to writing more with the intention to develop deeper thinking, reflect on my learning and growth and seek new ideas too.
